Mashama, a Chinese designer, presented the spring-summer 2019 collection at the Paris Descartes University in Paris. MASHAMA rejects the use of tired representations of Chinese culture, embraces influences, illuminating them in an exclusively Chinese aesthetic. Glitters are found in the making – rainbow shimmering sequins, shiny satins, lace-embroidered snakeskin and acid yellow raincoats.
In this collection, women are protected by modern sewing combined with very urban elastic outerwear. For the designer, the Ouroboros – a snake that eats its own tail in an eternal cycle of renewal, as well as the serpent as a symbol of life and death appearing on the stem of Asclepius, god of medicine , are the two key motifs of the collection.
The power of the symbol is felt in the place of the show – University Paris Descartes – where is a statue of Asclepius, a rod in his hand, presides over an iron gate. Explored as an impression in the collection, the snake twists and distorts between pretty flowers and curled tiles, fused together on sumptuous silks draped.
